Słynny i bardzo popularny już za życia włoski kompozytor operowy, Giuseppe Verdi, właśnie zasiadał do swojej codziennej pracy nad partyturą, gdy nagle przez okno doleciał do jego uszu dźwięk katarynki. To co słyszał w niczym mu nie przypominało żadnego utworu. Wyjrzał przez okno – na dole stał stary kataryniarz i kręcił korbą katarynki tak nierówno, że wprost nie dało się słuchać. Verdi wiedział już, że nie napisze dziś ani jednego taktu do zamówionej opery. Zszedł pośpiesznie na dół.
– Posłuchaj mnie, dobry człowieku. Masz wspaniały instrument, na którym od razu zagrasz przepiękne melodie, jeśli tylko zaczniesz równo kręcić tą korbą – ujął rękę starego i wyrównał jej ruch.
Popłynęły miękkie tony pięknej la danzy. Starzec, rozpoznawszy kompozytora, zachwycony, rozpływał się w podziękowaniach, a Verdi, korzystając z pięknej pogody, z miejsca wybrał się na krótką przechadzkę, odprowadzany dźwiękami katarynki.
Wracając, już z daleka słyszał katarynkę, nadal grającą przed jego domem. Jakież jednak było jego zdziwienie, gdy doszedłszy do grającego starca zauważył wiszącą na jego szyi tabliczkę z napisem „Uczeń Verdiego”!
